Killer of Aristocratic Couple Hangs Himself
SANTANDER, Spain (AP) _ A man convicted of murdering his in-laws, the well-known Marquis and Marchioness of Urquijo, hanged himself in his prison cell, officials said.
Rafael Escobedo was found dead Wednesday in El Dueso prison. Officials said a guard found 34-year-old Escobedo hanging from the iron bars of his cell window with a bedsheet wrapped around his neck.
Escobedo was serving two concurrent 26-year prison terms for the murder of Manuel de la Sierra Torres, Marquis of Urquijo, and his wife, Maria Lourdes. They were shot at their Madrid home on Aug. 1, 1980.
Escobedo married Miriam de la Sierra, the couple’s daughter, in 1978. Several years after the murder, she divorced Escobedo and married Richard Dennis Rew, an American.
