County employees allowed to use vacation time for health premiums

December 29, 2018

The Mason County Board of Commissioners on Thursday passed a resolution to allow county employees to put vacation time toward their health benefits, finalized its 2018 budget, made some adjustments to its 2019 budget and said good-bye to one of its own during a meeting at the Mason County Courthouse.

The commission approved unanimously a resolution to allow county employees to use vacation time at their 2018 rates toward their premiums for health insurance in 2019. Commissioner Gary Castonia asked during discussion of the resolution if the employees used their vacation time, would it affect pensions?

“Employees can decide if they want to do it. It’s an opportunity to take advantage of that, (but) it’s not mandatory,” Mason County Administrator Fabian Knizacky said. “You’re correct that if (vacation time is) not used for a time period of when they’re retiring (and used on insurance premiums), it could impact their pensions.”
