LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) _ Junior forward Andy Markowski scored a career-high 16 points and pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds to lead Nebraska past North Carolina-Greensboro 75-51 in the season opener for both teams.

NC-Greensboro (0-1) took a 4-2 lead on a pair of Derrick Nix free throws with 18:12 remaining in the first half. But the Spartans didn’t score again for nearly 10 minutes as a tough Nebraska man-to-man defense forced Greensboro to miss 18 consecutive shots.

The Huskers (1-0) scored 22 unanswered points during the NC-Greensboro drought, with eight of those points coming from Markowski. Nebraska led 24-4 on Tyronn Lue’s basket with 8:49 remaining.

Nebraska led 39-14 at the half as NC-Greensboro hit just five of its 34 shots in the first half, or 15 percent.

The Spartans improved from the field in the second half, hitting 14 of 29 attempts. But six of those baskets came after Nebraska Coach Danny Nee had cleared his bench. The Huskers led by as many as 39 in the second period.

Joining Markowski in double figures for Nebraska were Lue with 14 points, Venson Hamilton with 13 points and 10 rebounds and Cookie Belcher with 11 points.
