French Open semifinalist Gabriela Sabatini routed Scotland’s
EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) _ French Open semifinalist Gabriela Sabatini routed Scotland’s Suzie Mair 6-0, 6-3 Friday to reach the final of the Scottish Grasscourt championships.
In Sunday’s final, the 17-year-old Argentinian will meet American Lisa Bonder, who beat Norway’s Amy Joensson 6-4, 6-2.
In the men’s event, Sweden’s Anders Jarryd beat Australian Des Tyson 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to advance to a semifinal against the world’s top-ranked player, Ivan Lendl.
In an all-American quarterfinal, Johan Kriek also was pushed to three sets by Jonathan Canter before advancing with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 victory. He will meet Andres Gomez of Ecuador in Saturday’s other semifinal.
Sabatini yielded only six points in a 20-minute opening set before the Edinburgh-based Mair, a part-timer after quitting the women’s circuit 18 months ago, fought back by breaking serve.
Sabatini, adapting her smooth groundstokes to grass, then regained control and overpowered the Scottish teen-ager.
Tyson, ranked 238th in the world to Jarryd’s No. 26, posed problems on the slippery surface. But the Swede, a Wimbledon semifinalist two years ago, recovered after the second set struggle to take the third convincingly.
Jarryd, who was seeded No. 5 when he reached the Wimbledon semifinal, will be unseeded this time round after dropping in the rankings.
He said, ″It’s so much easier of you’re seeded because now I can play (Boris) Becker or Lendl in the first round. Obviously I’ll be disappointed if I do.
″All I can do is to prepare hard and do my best,″ he said.
