BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) _ UCLA quarterback Cory Paus broke his right ankle in the third quarter of Saturday’s 17-12 loss to California.
Coach Bob Toledo would not go as far as saying Paus will miss the rest of the season, but it’s probable. Paus will have surgery sometime next week when the swelling has gone down.
Paus was carted off the field after getting injured with 12:02 left in the third quarter when he got sandwiched by two Cal defenders while completing a 28-yard pass to Craig Bragg.
Paus was replaced by freshman Drew Olson, who also left the game with an injury. Olson sprained his throwing (right) shoulder and is expected to miss at least a week. Freshman John Sciarra finished the game. Olson will be re-evaluated Monday.
``We lost more than a game,″ Toledo said. ``Cory Paus broke his ankle and Drew Olson separated his shoulder. We just didn’t have enough bullets. You can’t prepare three quarterbacks.″
