NOVARA, Italy (AP) _ Two convicted Red Brigades terrorists sawed through the bars on a skylight and climbed over the roof to escape from the prison wing of a hospital in this northern Italian city, officials reported Tuesday.

The convicts were identified as Calogero Diana, 37, serving a life term for killing a police officer, and Giuseppe Di Cecco, 31, serving 20 years for terrorist crimes.

The two had been taken in recent days to the hospital for forced feeding after staging hunger strikes to protest conditions in the maximum security section of Novara prison.

They escaped Monday night but their absence was not noticed until early Tuesday because they bunched their blankets and sheets to make it appear they were in bed asleep, the officials said.
