Clarke says no blame to Abbott over Hughes’ death
SYDNEY (AP) — Australia cricket captain Michael Clarke says Sean Abbott, who bowled the bouncer that resulted in the death of Phillip Hughes, can’t be blamed for the accident.
Clarke, writing in News Corp. newspapers’ Sunday edition, said “not one single person blames him ... he deserves our full support, he will absolutely have mine whenever he needs it, and that also goes for the entire Australian cricket community.”
Abbott, 22, has reportedly undergone counseling since the Tuesday accident at Sydney Cricket Ground. Hughes died Thursday.
Clarke says when Abbott wants to return to playing “I will be the first to strap on the pads and go stand up at the end of the net.”
The first test between India and Australia, set to start Thursday, was postponed. Hughes’ funeral is Wednesday.
