Bert Dear Sr.

Bert L. Dear Sr., 89, a lifelong resident of Kankakee, made his transition to eternal life Saturday (Dec. 22, 2018) from his home, surrounded by family.

He was born to William and Laura Dear on Nov. 28, 1929, in Kankakee. He was united in holy matrimony to Elizabeth Eggleston on Feb. 10, 1952.

Mr. Dear was an honorably discharged veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired from Valspar after 41 years where he served as union president. He also was employed by Ford Motor Company for five years and a successful entrepreneur for more than 10 years, during which he owned and operated the Paradise Lounge.

He was a diligent and dedicated community activist and outspoken proponent of equal rights and civic responsibility. Bert established the NAACP chapter in Kankakee County, where he was the first president. He received his NAACP Lifelong Membership Award in 1974. He was elected over five terms as Kankakee Township trustee and several other ad-hoc committees in the community. Mr. Dear was a member of Caldwell Chapel AME Zion Methodist Church for more than 65 years. He served as trustee for many years.

He leaves to cherish his memory for more than 66 years, his devoted and lovely wife, Elizabeth Dear, to this union, two daughters, Lynette (Quidon) Brown, Kankakee, and Audrey McMiller, Phoenix; two sons, Bert (Doris) Dear Jr., Kankakee, and Dana Dear Sr., Glendale, Ariz.; two more daughters, Bernice (Ray) Satterwhite, Phoenix, and Sheila Harris, California; one son, Doreese Winfield, Las Vegas, one brother, Walter Spurlock II, Crete; three brothers in-law, Sam (Eva) Ames and Willie Ames, Kankakee; Sherman Ames, Columbus, Miss.; Julia (Everette) Branson, Chicago; Sandra Ames, Griffith, Ind.; 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends too numerous to name.

Preceding him in death were his parents; son, Andre White; grandson, Abduul Reed; brothers, Fredrick and William Dear Jr.; and many relatives and friends.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at Jones Funeral Home in Kankakee. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, at Second Baptist Church, Kankakee, with the Rev. Carl Randle officiating. Interment will be in Mound Grove Gardens, Kankakee.
