No. 15 Washington 72, California 51

January 23, 1998

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) _ Jamie Redd scored 18 points off the bench and Amber Hall recorded her 11th straight double-double to lead No. 15 Washington past California 72-51 Thursday night.

Hall added 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Megan Franza scored 14 points for Washington, which won its 11th straight over California. Masa Radovic topped Cal with 13 points.

Washington (12-3, 3-3 Pac-10) won its second straight while California (5-11, 1-5) lost its fourth straight and seventh of eight.

California hung tough early in the first half, trailing just 13-10 after Marie Folsom’s jumper with 12:50 left.

Then the Huskies took control, outscoring the Bears 22-5 over the rest of the half and holding Cal to a single field goal over a 10-minute span.

Cal’s choice to push the ball inside _ 30 of its 31 shots in the first half came within the 3-point circle _ resulted in futility and a technical foul on coach Marianne Stanley, who berated an official in frustration over not getting more fouls called under the basket.

The Bears kept pace in the second half, cutting the lead to as few as 12 points, 54-42, following Jamilla Churchill’s lay-in after a steal with 6:55 left.

But Washington’s big run proved too much to overcome. The Huskies led by no fewer than 13 points over the final six minutes.
