August 27, 1987

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) _ An inter-island passenger ship sank, leaving 30 people missing and feared dead, the Search and Rescue Agency said today.

The 70-ton K.M. Benua Baru-IV, carrying 40 passengers, sank last Saturday in stormy weather off Piang island, 1,000 miles northeast of Jakarta, the agency said.

Ten survivors were rescued by passing ships, it said.

The agency said a search was continuing for the missing people, all identified as Indonesians.

The K.M. Benua Baru-IV is the third inter-island passenger ship reported to have sunk in Indonesia due to bad weather during the past month.

Nineteen people were killed in the earlier accidents.
