Man charged after dogs found in hot truck

July 21, 2019

NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island man faces charges after police say he left five dogs alone in a trailer for more than an hour during a stiflingly hot day.

North Smithfield police say they responded to a store parking lot on Friday afternoon after getting multiple calls about the dogs.

Police say Jeffery Menard Levesque came out of the store a few minutes after officers arrived and said he had only been inside for a few minutes to use the restroom.

Police say the dogs had been left in the trailer for an hour and nine minutes.

Levesque was charged with mistreatment of animals, unnecessary cruelty to animals and animal confinement in motor vehicle. It’s not clear if he has an attorney.

The dogs were treated and are expected to be OK.
