Hoops star Latta angry father’s funeral can’t at school gym

August 2, 2018

YORK, S.C. (AP) — The family of basketball star Ivory Latta is upset they can’t hold the funeral for her father in the gym where her father drove her to pursue her dreams.

Authorities say 67-year-old Charlie Latta died Tuesday in a wreck on U.S. 321 in York.

Ivory Latta told The Herald of Rock Hill she wanted to have her father’s funeral at the “Cougar Dome” gym where she played. It used to be York High School, but is now York Middle School.

York School District spokesman Tim Cooper says district policy only allows current students or school employees to have funerals in school buildings.

Latta is South Carolina’s all-time leading high school scorer and says her father opened doors not just for her, but dozens of women in the community.
