Prison inmate dies in custody
A 74-year-old Nebraska State Penitentiary inmate died early Wednesday at the prison, according to a Nebraska Department of Correctional Services news release.
Roger K. Schmidt’s cause of death hasn’t been determined, but he was receiving long-term medical care for an unspecified condition, the release said.
In 2007, Schmidt was sentenced to 38 to 45 years in prison for first-degree sexual assault of a child convictions out of Jefferson County.
The circumstances of his death will be investigated by a grand jury as required by Nebraska law whenever someone dies in prison.
