Monaco Upsets Massu at Brasil Open
COSTA DO SAUIPE, Brazil (AP) _ Unseeded Juan Monaco of Argentina upset second-seeded Nicolas Massu of Chile 6-4, 6-2 Tuesday in the first round of the Brasil Open.
Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador and Guillermo Canas of Argentina retired during the second sets of their matches. Lapentti complained of heat exhaustion, ending his match with Spain’s David Ferrer leading 6-4, 5-2. Canas dropped out while trailing Spain’s Fernando Verdasco 6-1, 1-0.
In other matches, eighth-seeded Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina beat Flavio Saretta of Brazil 6-2, 6-2; Galo Blanco of Spain beat countryman David Sanchez 6-3, 7-6 (5); Luis Horna of Peru eliminated Pedro Braga of Brazil 6-3, 6-2; and 17-year-old Frenchman Richard Gasquet defeated Franco Ferreiro of Brazil 6-0, 7-6 (5).
Eight more matches remained on the schedule for Tuesday.
Third-seeded Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil, the world No. 17, was due to make his tournament debut against Oscar Fernandez of Spain.
