CHICAGO (AP) _ Diego Gutierrez scored two goals against his former team as the Chicago Fire defeated the Kansas City Wizards 3-1 on Saturday.

The Fire (6-3) kept its hold on first place in the Western Conference of the MLS, snapping a two-game losing streak. Kansas City remains in the cellar at 1-8.

Gutierrez scored in the 27th and 76th minutes. The midfielder appeared in 28 games for Kansas City in 1996 before suffering a devastating knee injury in 1997. Chicago picked up Gutierrez in the eighth round of the MLS expansion draft, and he became a key component of the Fire’s 1998 title run.

Gutierrez scored his first goal on the rebound of a Ante Razov shot that struck the left post and dribbled to the top of the Wizards penalty area and ripped a 22-yard shot into the left corner of the net for his second.

Josh Wolff scored the Fire’s first goal of the night, slashing through the penalty area to reach a pass from Jerzy Podbrozny and slip a shot past Wizards goalkeeper Chris Snitko in the 17th minute.

Mo Johnston scored the lone goal for Kansas City, netting a header on a cross from Jake Dancy in the 57th minute. Preki also assisted on the play.
