Police: Deadly shooting stemmed from suspected tool theft
ST. LOUIS (AP) — A St. Louis man has been charged with fatally shooting a man he suspected of stealing his tools.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 51-year-old David Allen Sproling was charged Wednesday with involuntary manslaughter and armed criminal action in the death of 60-year-old William Kirkwood, of St. Louis. No attorney is listed for him in online court records.
Sproling is accused of confronting Kirkwood at gunpoint Tuesday because he suspected Kirkwood had tools that were stolen from his property. Police say in charging documents that Sproling reportedly tried to physically detain the unarmed Kirkwood, and fired multiple shots when Kirkwood attempted to get free.
Court documents say Sproling told police he shot Kirkwood, and surrendered his pistol. Authorities haven’t specified whether Sproling fired the shots intentionally or accidentally.
