TOKYO (AP) _ Former minor leaguer Mike Brown pinch hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning Wednesday to lead the Central League champion Yomiuri Giants to a 7-5 victory over the Yokohama Taiyo Whales in Japanese baseball.


INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Col. Micki King Hogue, a 1972 Olympic gold medalist, has been elected president of U.S. Diving, the national governing body for the sport.

Hogue, who is commander of the University of Kentucky’s Air Force ROTC, had served as vice president of administration for U.S. Diving the past two years.


MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - Neale Fraser was reappointed captain of the Australian Davis Cup tennis team for another two years on Wednesday. Australia will play the United States in the Davis Cup finals Nov. 30-Dec. 2 in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The renewal of Fraser’s contract will allow him to pass Harry Hopman’s record of 22 years as Australia’s Davis Cup captain.

In Fraser’s 21 years as captain, Australia won the Cup in 1973, 1977, 1983 and 1986.


MILAN, Italy (AP) - Poor field conditions at Milan’s San Siro stadium may force Internazionale to play next Wednesday’s UEFA Cup match against Rapid Vienna in Verona - about 100 miles east of Milan.

An attempt to play the match in nearby Bergamo was vetoed by the City Council, which cited security problems.

San Siro’s field was resodded for the World Cup in June, but the grass has failed to take root. San Siro is also the home field of European champion A.C. Milan.


WAGGA WAGGA, Australia (AP) - Commonwealth light-heavyweight champion Guy Waters of Australia knocked out Canadian Dave Fiddler at 23 seconds of the second round in a non-title fight Wednesday.

Waters, who won for the 13th time in 15 fights, four of them by knockout, sent Fiddler to the canvas with a strong uppercut.

Fiddler lost for the fifth time. He has 15 victories and a draw in 21 fights as a light heavyweight.

Fiddler, of Edmonton, Alberta, won all six of his bouts as a middleweight before moving up a division. He has made three unsuccessful attempts at the Canadian title.


MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - Britain’s Nick Faldo has entered the Australian Open golf championship to be played in Sydney Nov. 29-Dec 2.

Faldo is the first golfer since Tom Watson in 1977 to win both the British Open and Masters in the same year.


MILAN, Italy (AP) - A series of races for potential America’s Cup challengers scheduled for the Balearic Islands in November was called off Wednesday by the European America’s Cup Class Association.

The association said the withdrawal of the Italian yacht Il Moro Di Venezia prompted the decision. The Japanese challenger pulled out earlier.
