Alle-Kiski Valley campus clippings: Bianco fitting in with Point Park volleyball

A junior college All-American last season, Brittney Bianco is adjusting to her new volleyball home.

Bianco, a Freeport graduate and newcomer to the Point Park volleyball team, posted 13 assists as the Pioneers recorded their first win of the season Saturday, 3-0 over Columbia International.

The 5-foot-5 junior setter, named to the National Junior College Athletic Association’s 2017 women’s volleyball All-America team last season at Butler County Community College, had 19 assists and 10 digs in a 3-1 loss to Lawrence Tech on Friday.

Freshman middle hitter Ariel Rafferty (Riverview) recorded five kills and a .444 hitting percentage in the win over Columbia International.

Women’s soccer

Akron

Junior Ashley Amato (Plum) scored her first goal of the season as the Zips won, 3-0, on Sunday at Wofford. The goal, on a shot from the left wing, gave Akron a 1-0 lead just 3 minutes, 34 seconds into the game.

Duquesne

Sophomore Deena Debaldo (Fox Chapel) scored as the Dukes beat Jacksonville, 3-0, on Friday. DeBaldo’s score game at the 49:45 mark and gave Duquesne a 2-0 lead.

Pitt

Sophomore Dixon Veltri (Fox Chapel) scored the winning goal in the Panthers’ 2-1 victory over Jacksonville on Sunday. Veltri’s goal, at the 69:37 mark, bounced off the crossbar and in. A UNC Wilmington transfer, Veltri has one goal and two assists in Pitt’s first four games.

Men’s basketball

Penn State New Kensington

Coach Art McCray continued to add to his recruiting class for the upcoming season, getting a commitment last week from Tavon Ngangum of Prince George’s Community College (Md.). A Silver Spring, Md., native, Ngangum averaged 3.9 points, 2 rebounds and 1.9 assists as a sophomore for Prince George’s.

Ngangum represented the latest recruit for PSNK. Marcus Wisor, a 6-5 forward from Phipsburg-Osceola, committed in early August, and New Castle guard Carrington Smith committed in late July.

Other recruits in PSNK’s class, who came aboard in June, included Carrick guard Lamar Lewis; Seton LaSalle guard Brent Ivory and guard/forward Jakob Richardson; guard DeAndre Mathis, a CCAC-Boyce transfer; and forward William Philpot and guard Tavarski Wardlow, transfers from Penn State Beaver.

PSNK finished 4-17 overall and 2-14 in the Penn State University Athletic Conference last season.
