Phillies Sign Jeff Brantley
PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ The Philadelphia Phillies signed free agent pitcher Jeff Brantley to a one-year contract that could be worth as much as $2.75 million Tuesday.
Brantley will get a base salary of $250,000 but could receive up to $2.5 million in incentives.
Brantley, 36, began the 1999 season as the Phillies’ closer but underwent surgery to repair a torn right shoulder in May and missed the rest of the reason.
The Phillies signed baseball’s top free-agent closer last week, agreeing to a $3 million, one-year contract with Mike Jackson after a lengthy delay for medical tests.
Jackson was the Phillies’ second major acquisition of the offseason, following a trade with San Diego for right-handed starter Andy Ashby.
In order to make room for Brantley on the 40-man roster, the Phillies assigned the contract of infielder Dave Doster. They have 10 days to trade Doster or release him.
