Romania’s former boxing chief sentenced to prison

June 17, 2015

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — A Bucharest court has sentenced a former chairman of Romania’s Boxing Federation to three years in prison on charges that he tried to influence a sentencing hearing in return for money.

Former boxer Rudel Obreja, who served as the federation’s chairman from 2004 until 2012, was sentenced on Wednesday. The ruling is not final.

Prosecutors said Obreja had demanded 1 million euros ($893,000) from a media tycoon who had been convicted of a crime, saying he would persuade a court to spare the businessman a prison sentence.

Sorin Ovidiu Vantu, a former owner of Realitatea TV who was released after serving part of a two-year sentence for helping a fugitive escape Romania, informed prosecutors about Obreja’s demands.
