Boxer Still in Critical Condition
ST. LOUIS (AP) _ A boxer remained in critical condition Sunday with a brain injury after being knocked out by the IBF’s No. 1 junior flyweight contender.
There was no change overnight in the condition of Fernando Ibarra of Laredo, Texas, said Susan Hakes, spokeswoman for Saint Louis University Hospital.
Ibarra had a blood clot on his brain after being knocked out by Ratanachai Vorapin of Thailand in the sixth round of a scheduled eight-rounder Friday night.
Doctors said Saturday that it probably would be several days before they could determine the extent of Ibarra’s recovery.
Ibarra collapsed after taking a punch to the jaw. He was conscious and walked to the dressing room, but later lost consciousness. He was revived by a doctor at the scene and taken to the hospital.
