New Strike At Puebla Plant
PUEBLA, Mexico (AP) _ The nearly 10,000 autoworkers at the Volkswagen plant here went on strike after management rejected their demand for a wage increase.
The plant’s 9,700 workers walked off the job Monday after negotiations broke down. Management had offered a 10 percent raise, retroactive to January 1. The union representatives demand an increase of 15 percent, retroactive to Dec. 16.
The Volkswagen plant in Puebla was shut down by a strike for eight weeks last fall.
Rodolfo Contreras Duran, the union representative, said in a phone interview the workers ″are prepared to bear the movement as long as they don’t see a favorable solution to their request.″
Puebla is 81 miles east of Mexico City.
