SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) _ Linus Rhode assisted on both goals as Portland beat Santa Clara 2-1 Saturday night to qualify for the NCAA tournament semifinals next week.

The Pilots (16-2-3) will play Friday at Richmond, Va., against the winner of Sunday's Southern Methodist-Wisconsin game.

It is the second time the Portland men's team has made it to the final four. The first trip came in 1988.

Keir Cochran scored Portland's first goal at the 39:24 mark, deflecting the ball into the net off defender Randy Allen. The Pilots made it 2-0 on Khary Knowles' header at 53:12.

Santa Clara halved the lead when Mike Lynch took Jeremy Buettner's corner kick and drilled it inside the left post. The Broncos controlled the ball most of the final 10 minutes, but couldn't get the ball past Portland's freshman goalkeeper, Todd Lawton.

Clive Charles, who coaches both of Portland's soccer teams, flew cross-country to be on the sidelines for the men's victory, then boarded a plane back to Chapel Hill, N.C., where his women's team plays Notre Dame for the national championship on Sunday.

Santa Clara finished the season at 15-3-2.
