Jury selection continues for defendant in UMass rape trial
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) — Jury selection for the trial of the second defendant charged with raping a University of Massachusetts student in her Amherst dorm room in October 2012 has started.
The judge in 21-year-old Justin King’s trial says he hopes to hold opening statements by Wednesday.
King, of Pittsfield, was one of four men charged with raping the woman.
King has pleaded not guilty and his lawyer says the sex was consensual.
The woman, who drank alcohol and smoked marijuana with the defendants, told police she didn’t consent.
The woman told the men not to visit her, but they were allowed into the dorm by another student, which prompted an overhaul of dorm security measures at the university.
One man has already been convicted and sent to prison for up to 10 years.
