College basketball Brooks’ 24 points power UH to easy win in opener

Armoni Brooks hit six 3-pointers and finished with 24 points to help lead Houston to an easy 101-54 season-opening victory over Alabama A&M on Saturday at H&PE Arena.Brooks, the 2018 American Athletic Conference sixth man of the year, was 9-of-13 from the field, including 6-of-10 from long range.The Cougars, who won their 16th consecutive home game at H&PE Arena as construction on the Fertitta Center nears completion, hit 53.3 percent of their shots from the field, including a scorching 67.7 percent (21-of-31) in the second half. They also outrebounded the Bulldogs 37-20 in the first meeting between the two schools.Corey Davis Jr., a preseason all-conference preseason selection, finished with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field, including 5-of-9 on 3-pointers. Breaon Brady added 12 points with five rebounds, and Cedrick Alley Jr. had 11 points with five rebounds.Nate Hinton, the conference’s preseason freshman of the year, had seven points and a game-high seven rebounds in his UH debut.Andre Kennedy led Alabama A&M with 14 points, and Jalen Reeder added 13 points and a team-high four rebounds.Baylor 80, Southern 53Devonte Bandoo scored 25 points to help lead the Bears to a victory over the Jaguars at Waco and avoid another setback against a Southwestern Athletic Conference team.Baylor (1-1) bounced back from a season-opening loss to Texas Southern — its first loss to a SWAC team in 57 games.The Bears used a 16-0 run o turn a one-point deficit into a 50-35 lead with 12 minutes to go.Tristan Clark was 8-of-9 from the field and scored 17 points for Baylor despite battling foul trouble for the second game in a row.
