NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) _ A man who described himself as a cave explorer was pulled from a storm drain after becoming stuck in the city’s sewer system.
A soaking wet Nathaniel Foss was rescued Friday by a passer-by and an off-duty police officer after he called for help.
Bruce Christman told the Daily Hampshire Gazette of Northampton he had just pulled into a parking lot on Armory Street when he heard Foss’s call: ``Help me. Help me. I’m stuck. Get me out of here.″
Feeling ``really stupid,″ Christman said, he yelled into a storm drain where the sound seemed to be coming from and Foss answered. Christman and an off-duty state trooper used a crowbar to pry open a nearby manhole and pulled a mud-covered and apparently ``petrified″ Foss out, Christman said.
Foss, 33, of Northampton told Christman he’d been stuck in the drainage system for hours. Foss later told Northampton police Lt. Michael Patenaude he was a spelunker, a person who explores caves.
The phone listing at Foss’s address was busy on repeated calls and he could not immediately be reached for comment Saturday. Police said Foss was not injured and faced no charges.
