Brook Park woman accused of intentionally hitting, killing Cleveland woman with car

CLEVELAND, Ohio – A Brook Park woman is accused of intentionally hitting and killing another woman with her car during a fight Monday in Cleveland’s Bellaire-Puritas neighborhood, police said.

April Scarton, 32, is charged with aggravated murder in the death of Melissa D. Lang, according to court records.

She surrendered late Monday at the First District police station where she received medical treatment for glass on her face, police said.

Scarton requested a preliminary hearing during her arraignment Wednesday in Cleveland Municipal Court. The hearing is scheduled Oct. 5, court records say.

She remains in custody at the Cuyahoga County Jail on $500,000 bond.

Scarton struck Lang with a car during a fight that happened just after 5:30 p.m. Monday outside Lang’s home on Astor Avenue near West 137th Street, according to police reports and court records.

Lang, 40, died after Cleveland EMS took her to Fairview Hospital.

Two other men were also in the car but they have not been charged with crimes, court records show.

Investigators have not said why the group was fighting.

Scarton and the two men were in a 2018 Kia Forte when she drove it at Lang and ran her over, court records say.
