Utah prosecutor: Officers’ shooting of suspect was justified
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah prosecutor says that five Salt Lake City police officers’ use of deadly force that resulted in the death of a man in a November 2018 shooting was justified and no charges will be filed against the officers.
District Attorney Sim Gil announced his findings Friday regarding the death of Cody Belgard, who was shot after he rammed into a police car and two other vehicles while trying to evade arrest.
According to police, Belgard ignored commands to get on the ground to raise his hands and instead pointed an object at police.
Police said officers believed the object was a gun but later discovered it was a cellphone.
Belgard had several warrants out for his arrest and faced previous charges including, theft and possession of marijuana.
