KIGALI, Rwanda (AP) _ An overloaded bus overturned in western Rwanda, killing 39 people and injuring 100 others, state-run Radio Rwanda reported Sunday.

The accident took place Thursday on the road to Kibuye, about 125 miles west of the capital, Kigali, but was not reported until Sunday.

The radio said the bus, belonging to the national transport company, Onatracom, was carrying 148 passengers, more than double its capacity of 60, when it overturned on a bad road. Most of the passengers were families visiting prisoners held on suspicion of taking part in the 1994 genocide, the report said.

More than 120,000 are imprisoned in Rwanda in connection with the 1994 slaughter of more than 500,000 people on orders of an extremist Hutu government.
