AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ Carisse Moody scored 14 points and Adeola Olanrewaju had 11 as No. 21 North Carolina State used a stifling defense Saturday to beat No. 10 Texas Tech 59-51.

Daphne Hutcherson’s back-to-back layups gave the Wolfpack (7-1) their first lead at 53-49 and NC State held Texas Tech (5-1) without a field goal over the final 7:30 of the game.

The victory at the University of Texas’ Erwin Center moved Wolfpack coach Kay Yow to within four wins of 600 for her career.

Averaging under 40 percent shooting for the season, North Carolina State struggled again on an unfamiliar court, hitting just 18 of 52 shots from the floor.

The Wolfpack made up for it defensively by forcing Texas Tech into 28 turnovers and held the Lady Raiders to 35 percent shooting. Moody had seven steals.

Jia Perkins led Texas Tech with 12 points and Katrissa O’Neal added 11 but combined for 5-of-24 shooting.

The Wolfpack also got Tech’s top scorer, forward Plenette Pierson, to foul out with 11 minutes to play. Pierson averages 15.6 points but left with just six points and three rebounds.

With Pierson out of the middle, NC State outscored Texas Tech 30-16 in the paint.

Perkins, who had hit seven straight foul shots, could have tied it late. Leading 54-50 in with 2:39 to play, NC State sent her to the foul line twice but Perkins could make just one of four free throws.
