Bjorn Borg Wins Nuveen Masters
NAPLES, Fla. (AP) _ Bjorn Borg defeated Henri Leconte 7-5, 6-4 Sunday to win the $300,000 Nuveen Masters, the season-ending championship event for the worldwide senior tennis circuit.
Borg, who has been on the senior tour since its inception in 1993, had qualified for the Masters in each of the previous five years, but had never before won. He lost in the final of the inaugural Masters in 1995 to Jimmy Connors. Last year, he fell in the semifinals to eventual champion Tim Wilkison.
``This is a great win for me because I’ve been trying for five years,″ Borg said. ``Last year, I played really well all week, but I got sick. This was my year.″
On Sunday, Borg lost his first two service games to trail 1-4. He battled back to 4-5 where Leconte served for the set. But at deuce, Borg ran down a Leconte overhead and returned a lob which the Frenchman shanked.
The next point was almost identical, Borg chasing down two consecutive smashes and returning lobs. On his third chance at putting away the ball, Leconte missed, giving Borg the break and leveling the set 5-5.
Borg won the next two games, breaking Leconte in the 12th game, to capture the first set.
``It’s not easy to see a lob when it’s in the sun,″ Leconte said. ``At 5-5, that was the important game. But Bjorn was just doing the same things he always does. He just doesn’t miss and it puts so much pressure on you for every shot.:
Borg cranked up his game in the second set, losing only two points on serve, and broke Leconte in the ninth game en route to capturing the $100,000 winner’s check.
