Sweden Wins World Handball Title
CAIRO, Egypt (AP) _ Sweden won the World Handball Championship gold-medal game Tuesday, beating Russia 25-24 behind six-goal performances by Stefan Lovgren and Pierre Thorsson.
``We have a good time, we have team spirit, we watch opera together and we work together,″ Swedish coach Bengt Joahnsson said.
``I don’t have as many good scorers as Russia, but they (the Swedish players) have a good head. They are motivated and that is the most important thing.″
Ljubomir Eranjes added five goals for the Swedes, who rallied from a 14-12 halftime deficit against the defending champion Russians.
Thorsson gave Sweden, the European champion, a 17-16 lead with a powerful shot seven minutes into the second half. The Swedes opened a four-goal margin at 22-18 with four straight goals.
Russia, which got six goals from Alexambre Toutchkine and five from Igor Lavrov, cut it to one goal a number of times, but was unable to pull even. Lavrov made a 27-foot shot in the last second as the whistle blew.
Sweden also won titles in 1954, 1958 and 1990.
In the third-place game, Yugoslavia beat Spain 27-24.
