RICHMOND, Va. (AP) _ Darryl Franklin scored 24 points, including a 3-pointer that started a crucial second-half run Saturday, as American broke its 10-game losing streak by beating Richmond 77-73.
The victory in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams snapped the Eagles’ longest losing streak since the 1968-69 season.
American (1-11) took a 39-36 halftime lead after Nathan Smith hit a 3-pointer with five seconds remaining. It was the Eagles eighth 3-pointer in a half, that saw the lead change hands eight times and the score tied eight times.
Duane Gilliam opened the second half with seven points as the Eagles built their lead to 53-42 with 14:20 to play. The Spiders (4-7) came back to pull within 66-65 with 2:11 remaining, but Franklin hit a 3-pointer to ignite a 7-0 lead as the Eagles pulled away.
Gilliam and Smith had 15 points each for the Eagles, and Marko Krivokapic added 12.
Cass Weaver had 19 points to lead the Spiders, while senior Derrick Wall had a career-high 16 points and six blocks. Wall also had 10 rebounds. Oliver added 14 points, and Eric Poole had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
