Greece Jails Sheep Thief

January 23, 2001

THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) _ A court in Greece has sentenced a farm worker to nine years in prison for stealing dozens of sheep, violating Greek rustling laws that date back nearly 100 years.

Dimitris Tsatsanidis, a Greek born in the former Soviet Union, was convicted of stealing about 70 sheep in a rural area near the town of Veria, 300 miles north of Athens. He was sentenced along with his accomplice, Lavdim Kotori, an Albanian man. Kotori received a six-year sentence.

Strict rustling laws were imposed in the early 20th century to stop blood feuds among farmers over their livestock.
