Durham man dies in three-vehicle crash

April 1, 2019

A 22-year-old man died after a three-vehicle crash in Durham County early Saturday.

Isaac Xavier Shuler, of Durham, was traveling south on U.S. Highway 501 near Harris Mill Road around midnight when a northbound Ford Expedition crossed the median and struck Shuler’s vehicle and another vehicle head-on.

All parties involved were taken to Duke Hospital. Shuler died there.

Authorities identified the driver of the Ford as Moises Hernandez San Juan, 20, of Roxboro. A preliminary investigation found that alcohol contributed to the crash, authorities said.

Investigators will work with the Durham County district attorney’s office to determine any charges.

Shuler worked at RSI Residential Services, Inc. in Chapel Hill, providing support and care for people with disabilities, the company’s operations director said.

“We are in shock in trying to understand this,” Jeffrey Ryan said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

Editor’s note: Authorities first reported the victim’s last name as Schuler. It has been corrected in this story.
