MU roundup: Herd track has three runner-up finishes
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Marshall University women’s track and field athletes had three runner-up finishes in the Conference USA indoor championships at the CrossPlex.
Safiyyah Mitchell was second in the 60-meter hurdles (8.44 seconds) followed by teammates Taylor Robinson (fourth, 8.65) and Christiana Dogan (eighth, 9.21).
Lauren Zagfila finished second in the pole vault (12-feet, 8 inches) and Macie Majoy was fourth (12-4).
Hasana Clark took second place in the weight throw (65-9.50).
Sarah Bever placed second in the pentathlon and Elena Marchand finished sixth in the shot put (47-2.25).
UTEP won the team championship. Marshall came in eighth among 12 teams.
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Iowa Hawkeyes pitcher Grant Judkins worked the first six innings, limiting Marshall to no hits and zero runs, Sunday in a 10-0 baseball victory at Heritage Park.
Marshall (1-3) managed only one hit against four pitchers for the Hawkeyes (2-1). Jaren Lovely had Marshall’s hit, a single in the eighth inning.
Thundering Herd starter Zac McNeel took the loss.
Marshall beat Pittsburgh in a Saturday night game at Osceola County Field, 7-2. Erik Rodriguez had three hits including a triple. Shane Hanon and Rey Pastrana both had a pair of hits. Starting pitcher Joshua Shapiro went five innings to get the win.
Next on the Marshall schedule is the Hughes Brothers Challenge in Wilmington, North Carolina. Marshall plays Iona at noon Friday.
CONWAY, S.C. - Towson University topped Marshall, 3-2, in a Sunday game of the Battle at the Beach hosted by Coastal Carolina.
Riley Theis hit a two-run triple for the Tigers (3-4) in the second inning. Blakely Burch smacked a two-run home run for Marshall (7-3) in the sixth inning. Abigail Tolbert was tagged with the Thundering Herd loss after giving up six hits and three runs in the first four innings.
Marshall recorded wins Saturday against Eastern Kentucky (8-4) and Presbyterian (10-1).
The Herd touched Eastern Kentucky (3-5) for five runs in the first inning and Hannah Giammarino homered in the fifth inning. Tolbert threw a seven-inning complete game.
Presbyterian (2-4-2) went down in a five-inning game when Marshall tied a program record with five homers. Aly Harrell homered twice while Mya Stevenson, Sierra Huerta and Giammarino had one each. Kailee Williamson was the winning pitcher.
Marshall plays next Friday-Sunday at the Holy City Showdown in Charleston, South Carolina, with games against UMass-Lowell, Iowa State, UNC Wilmington, Charleston Southern and Appalachian State.
BARBOURSVILLE - Penn State beat Marshall, 5-2, in women’s tennis Sunday inside the Huntington Tennis Club.
Anna Smith and Daniela Dankanych won singles matches for Marshall (2-7).
Smith downed Gabby O’Gorman of Penn State (6-2), 2-6, 6-3, 7-5. Dankanych topped Olivia Rohrbacher, 7-6 (4), 6-2.
The Herd has a break before a March 1 match at FIU and a March 2 contest against North Texas that is also at FIU.
