Iona 78, Hofstra 63

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) _ Phil Grant made two of his four 3-point-baskets in a 19-5 run in the final 9 minutes, and finished with 18 points as Iona beat Hofstra 78-63 Wednesday night.

Tarik Kirksay followed with 17 points for the Gaels (5-3) who held a 40-30 halftime lead. Kashif Hameed was next with 17 and Ivo Kresta added 15.

Anthony Davis, 5-for-18 from the field including 4-for-14 from 3-point range, had 15 points for the Flying Dutchmen (4-4). Craig Claxton added 12 points and Tim Beckett had 11.

After hitting on 5-of-6 free throws in the first half, Hofstra finished 13-for-25 while Iona was 19-for-26 from the line.

After Hameed’s layup gave Iona a 53-46 lead with 12:25 remaining, Hofstra went on a 9-4 run to get as close as 57-55. But Iona went on its decisive run behind Grant’s two 3-pointers and four points by John McDonald to make it 73-60 with 1:25 left.

Dwayne Posey made a free throw to cut the lead to 19-18 with 6:57 to play in the first half, but Iona finished the half with a 21-12 run.
