Carstensen wins Sturgis mayor’s race
STURGIS — Incumbent Mayor Mark Carstensen was elected to serve another three years in Sturgis, winning 395 votes to the 331 cast for Desaree Dargatz. Carstensen will begin his fourth term as mayor when he is sworn in at the May 6 Sturgis City Council meeting. Carstensen said he will continue to focus on residential growth and economic development for the community. “And we certainly want to continue with adding quality of life aspects so that people will want to visit here, move here, and remain here,” he said. Dargatz said she was “bummed” that she lost but was encouraged by the close race. “Everything I heard when I was campaigning was that people wanted a change, but I guess that’s not the case,” she said. “I do wish Mark the best.” There are 4,685 active registered voters in the city of Sturgis, as of April 9, according to the Meade County Auditor’s office. Based on these numbers, 15.7 percent of the active registered voters participated in the mayoral election Tuesday.
