Czechs Cruise in World Cup Qualifier

The Czech Republic, behind two goals from Patrik Berger, trounced Malta 6-0 on Wednesday in a World Cup qualifying game.

The European Championship runners-up scored four times in the second half of the Group Six game played in the Bohemian town of Teplice, Czech Republic.

Before a crowd of 18,000, Berger opened the scoring in the 12th minute, sending a direct kick past goalie Reginald Cini. Paul Nedved then struck from 20 yards in the 17th minute.

Berger, Lubos Kubik, Vladimir Smicer and Martin Frydek scored in the second half.

``We didn’t play too well at the beginning, but I am happy with the result,″ Czech coach Dusan Uhrin said.

In Lae, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu tied 1-1 in their Melanesian Group of Oceania regional qualifying. On Monday, the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea drew 1-1.

The winner of the Melanesian Group advances to the second round with the runner-up to play the winner of the Polynesian Group first round series.
