BARRINGTON, R.I. (AP) _ Robert L. Wolf, who retired in June as an executive vice president and chief financial officer of The Providence Journal Co., died after a long battle with Lou Gehrig's disease. He was 56.

Wolf died Friday at Rhode Island Hospital.

The Boston native began his career at the company in 1969 and served as vice president-finance, senior vice president-finance and executive vice president-finance and chief financial officer before retiring.

The Providence Journal Co. owns the Providence Journal-Bulletin, four television stations and a cable television operation.

Wolf is survived by his wife, Margot, and three children.
