HS TRACK AND FIELD: Vassell Leaping For State Medal

BY JOBY FAWCETT, STAFF WRITERMay 23, 2019

Two years ago, Zakeem Quincey Vassell began to scratch the surface of his talents, while looking up to those who he hoped to be compared to one day.

Now, he makes the trip to Shippensburg University to compete at the PIAA Track and Field Championship on Saturday.

He will arrive with high expectations after winning the District 2 Class 3A long jump with a personal-best of 22 feet, 2¾ inches.

A West Scranton senior, Vassell will close his high school career in an event in which Lackawanna Track Conference athletes have recently excelled at the state meet.

“This is a really great opportunity for me,” Vassell, 17, said. “Naturally, I want to go down and do well and win a medal. I am working really hard and am ready to go.”
