Woman Who Abandoned Newborn Convicted
PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Jurors took less than three hours Friday to convict a woman of attempted murder for dumping her newborn baby in the trash after giving birth at her workplace.
Liem Swat Nio, 35, faces a minimum of five years in prison when she is sentenced in July.
Prosecutors said Liem left the infant to die after his birth in 2001 in the plant where she packaged chocolate. Her attorney said she didn’t realize what she was doing.
Firefighters called to investigate a report of a woman bleeding found the boy, Joshua, face down under a pile of bloody paper towels. He survived and now is living with relatives.
