San Antonio Police: murder suspect was going to buy gun from teen he shot

December 26, 2018

The man arrested in connection with the September death of a South Side teen was going to buy a gun from the victim, according to a San Antonio Police affidavit.

Alonzo Cantu, 19, was arrested by police detectives Monday on a charge of murder. Police believe he shot 15-year-old Sonny Vidales through the victim’s bedroom window on Sept. 22.

In an early-morning exchange on social media that Saturday, Cantu arranged to buy a gun from Vidales for $420, according to the warrant for Cantu’s arrest. In the affidavit for the warrant, police said they found guns in Vidales’ bedroom that had previously been reported as stolen.

Cantu and Vidales met at Vidales’ bedroom window, the warrant states. Shortly after that, Vidales was shot in the chest. Vidales managed to walk to his mother’s bedroom, told her he had been shot and fell to the floor.

It’s unclear if the gun used was the one that was discussed in the social media exchange.

The victim’s mother, Christine Vidales, said her son collapsed in front of his 3-year-old sister. She said her son was funny, gregarious and a fiercely devoted brother to his siblings.

Detectives discovered the social media conversation on Vidales’ cell phone, which they found in his bedroom. It began at 12:58 a.m. that Saturday, the warrant states. When Cantu asked Vidales for his address, Vidales told him it was a house on Adolph Street.

“Yeah bro but I’m just saying u can’t come outside or something I don’t trust that inside (expletive),” Cantu told Vidales. About 40 minutes later, Cantu said: “420$ rn,” which stands for “right now.”

At 1:48 a.m., Vidales responded: “middle window.” Four minutes later, San Antonio police received a report of a shooting in progress.

A 40-caliber shell casing was found outside the window, according to the warrant.

Cantu is at the county jail under $100,000 bail.
