RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A former teacher has been arrested and charged with having sex with a student in North Carolina.

Local media outlets reported that 36-year-old Nicholas Conlon Smith of Raleigh was arrested Tuesday and charged with statutory rape with a 14-year-old girl. Smith also faces charges of felony sex with a student. It was not clear if more than one victim was involved.

Court records show the offenses occurred in 2011 and 2012, when Smith was a middle school teacher at the Montessori School of Raleigh.

It was not known if Smith has an attorney to comment on the charges.

The head of the school, Nancy Errichetti, issued a statement Tuesday that said the allegations are disturbing and the school is cooperating with the police investigation.
