SOUND TIGERS Sound Tigers drop third in a row for first time

January 6, 2019

It took until the midpoint of their season for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers to go winless in three games, but that’s where they sit after Saturday’s 3-2 loss to the Binghamton Devils at Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton, N.Y.

A three-goal second period for the Devils, capped by John Ramage’s goal with 1.5 seconds left, erased Bridgeport’s 1-0 lead and sent the Sound Tigers to back-to-back regulation-time losses for only the second time in the first 38 games of the year.

With goalie Jeremy Smith pulled for an extra attacker, Bridgeport rookie Otto Koivula scored with 1:57 left, giving him a goal in five consecutive games, but the Sound Tigers couldn’t generate a tying goal.

They still hit the midpoint at 21-11-4-2 for 48 points, their best 38-game record in a decade; the 2008-09 team was 24-10-2-2 after 38, though the AHL played an 80-game schedule back then instead of the current 76.

Travis St. Denis gave the Sound Tigers a lead on a power-play deflection, knocking down a shot by Mitch Vande Sompel (two assists) and sending it bounding past Devils goalie Evan Cormier late in the first.

Colby Sissons’ first pro goal tied it on a shot that changed directions on Smith. Mike Kapla gave the Devils a lead on a power play. And Ramage scored at the front of the net to finish off the period, though Smith and the Sound Tigers thought Marian Studenic had interfered with the goalie.

Cormier, who began the season playing college hockey in Canada, earned his first professional win with 26 saves.

Bridgeport all-star defenseman Sebastian Aho sat out with an upper-body injury he suffered on a check in Friday night’s 3-1 loss at Syracuse.

The Sound Tigers complete a six-game road trip Friday at Utica, N.Y., before coming home the next night to face Hartford. They’ll spend two nights at first-place Charlotte after that before a five-game homestand that will take them into February.
