Residents quiet on 2 proposals
Not one resident rose to speak during a public hearing Monday before the Fort Wayne Plan Commission over primary development plans for a boutique hotel and a mixed-use development planned by Indiana Tech.
According to Department of Planning Services staff documents, plans for a five-story, 124-room boutique hotel downtown call for the removal of an existing parking lot and construction of an L-shaped building oriented for pedestrians on West Main and South Harrison streets. Staff reports state that the first floor of the hotel has space for a lobby, bar seating, a library and uses and the building has the capacity for outdoor seating along Main and Harrison.
The developers have also proposed a drop-off lane near the hotel’s main entrance on Main Street.
Plans for the hotel, which is being developed as a joint venture between Oregon-based Provenance Hotels and Vera Bradley co-founder Barbara Baekgaard, were unveiled late last year. This year, the Fort Wayne City Council approved a $5.5 million tax-exempt revenue bond.
Indiana Tech’s proposal for the 1400 block of East Washington Boulevard will include restaurant and retail space, as well as multiple floors of school housing across two buildings.
Both located at the intersection of Schick and East Washington Boulevard, the first is a four-story building of 60,000 square feet. The second is a three-story building of 22,500 square feet. To accommodate, Indiana Tech is requesting property be rezoned from R2 two-family residential to a neighborhood center designation.
The university is also requesting ordinance waivers for building height and setback requirements.
The Plan Commission will discuss and vote on both requests Monday.
