Illinois St. 31, N. Iowa 29
NORMAL, Ill. (AP) _ Keith Goodnight ran for 169 yards and two touchdowns, and Todd Kurz kicked three field goals Saturday in leading Illinois State to a 31-29 win over Northern Iowa.
The Redbirds (3-6 overall, 2-3 league) grabbed a 31-7 lead in the Gateway Conference game and held off a Northern Iowa rally.
Northern Iowa (6-3, 5-1) began the comeback with a 6-yard TD run by Jeff Stovall late in the third quarter. Alonzo Clayton caught a 19-yard scoring pass from Steven Beard three minutes later. James Porter’s 3-yard run ended the scoring with 9:21 left as Beard’s pass for a two-point conversion that would have tied the game, fell incomplete.
Porter had also scored on a 15-yard run in the opening quarter.
Goodnight’s scored on runs of 1 and 5 yards.
Kurz’ kicks were 49, 49 and 39 yards, all in the second quarter.
Beard completed 16 of 27 passes for 314 yards. He was intercepted once and sacked once.
Illinois State’s Bill Hagman was 12-of-25 for 138 yards and one TD, a 13-yarder to Maceo Rainey.
