LANDOVER, Md. (AP) _ The Washington Wizards waived Charles Shackleford on Monday, less than a week after the center-forward was signed to a free-agent contract.

Shackleford played three minutes with no points in Saturday's pre-season game against the San Antonio Spurs. He was competing against forward-center Eric Leckner and second-round draft pick God Shammgod for a roster spot.

Shackleford averaged 5.6 points and 4.9 rebounds per game over five seasons _ two with the New Jersey Nets, two with the Philadelphia 76ers and 21 games with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

But Shackleford, 31, hadn't played since May, when he had knee surgery to relieve arthritis he suffered during a season in Greece, where he led the league in rebounding. He was waived two years ago by the Timberwolves.
