Maurice Sergent, 84, of Columbus, died Aug. 6, 2018, at Tabitha Nursing and Rehabilitation Center-Martin House in Lincoln.
The funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 8, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus with Rev. Chris Ramstad officiating. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until service time on Wednesday at the church. There will be a family prayer service at 6:45 p.m. Interment will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9 in the Columbus Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Immanuel Lutheran Church or School, or the donor’s choice.
Maurice Sergent was born on April 3, 1934, to James and Lillian (Wilson) Sergent in Evarts, Kentucky. He graduated from Loyall High School in 1952 and entered the United States Air Force on Feb. 8, 1955. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant, served as a crew chief of a refueling tanker stationed in Lincoln, and was honorably discharged on Feb. 7, 1959.
Maurice was united in marriage to Margie Erks on Nov. 23, 1958, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Utica. He attended Lincoln Barber College and worked as a barber at Park Barber Shop. Maurice later worked for many years as a glazer for Harding Glass in Columbus before retiring.
Maurice was a Cub Scout Leader and served on many boards at Immanuel Lutheran Church. He enjoyed working crossword puzzles, bicycle riding, chip carving crosses, and being part of a wood carvers club. He was a faithful member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Maurice is survived by wife Margie Sergent of Columbus, son Phillip (Dawn) Sergent of Middletown, Ohio; son Paul (Karen) Sergent of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; granddaughter Jessica (Andrew) Updegraff of Middletown, Ohio; grandson Justin (Amanda) Sergent of San Diego, California; sister Violet Howard of Middlesboro, Kentucky; sisters-in-law Nola Sergent of Baxter, Kentucky and Joyce Schmidt of Lincoln; brothers-in-law Ron Erks of Utica, and Bill Johnson of Batesville, Indiana; nieces and nephews.
Maurice was preceded in death by parents James and Lillian Sergent, sister Carol Hall and Dorothy Johnson; brothers Don, Claude, James Harold Sergent; sisters-in-law Teddy Sergent and Bev Erks; brothers-in-law Frank Schmidt and Reed Howard.
