Poll: Royal Household Should Employ More Minorities
LONDON (AP) _ Most British believe the royal family should set an example by employing more ethnic minorities, a new opinion poll indicates.
Only 10 of 891 staff members of the royal household are black or Asian and none hold a senior position, according to Buckingham Palace. Blacks and Asians make up about 5 percent of Britain’s 56 million people.
Nearly 70 percent of those polled by the National Opinion Polls thought the royal household should include more people from different backgrounds, according to the results released Wednesday.
Slightly more - 72 percent - thought the royal family’s staff should employ more minorities in senior positions.
A palace spokesman said senior appointments to the staff were approved by Queen Elizabeth II.
″The only criterion is that ... the best person for the job is chosen, regardless of any other consideration,″ said the spokesman, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The poll asked 1,166 people for their views. The margin of error was 2.9 percent.
